Houston Southeast Celebrates Black History Month
Houston Southeast was created to preserve the history and heritage of one of the city’s most vibrant communities while enhancing opportunities for those who live and work here. Our service to the broader community is the result of the vision, voice, and vigilance of many Black Americans who led the charge for our District to exist over 20 years ago.
State Representative Garnet Coleman of District 147 served tirelessly for over 30 years for the constituents of District 147 to envision leaders on the promise of areas like the Medical Center, Historic Third Ward, MacGregor, OST/Palm Center, Museum Park and Hermann Park. Even after his retirement in 2022; Rep. Coleman remains an active participant and advocate in efforts that bring opportunities for education, employment, affordable housing and economic empowerment to communities of color and beyond. In many ways, Houston Southeast is a reflection of Houston itself, an area where diversity, prosperity, promise, commerce, neighborhood pride, and social equity all converge.
As we move confidently in the direction of the District’s future, we will be sure to never lose sight of our rich past.
