What a decade of I-45 construction could mean for transit riders.

This spring, LINK Houston surveyed more than 500 Houstonians to better understand what people know about the North Houston Highway Improvement Project, how construction is already affecting transit trips, and where gaps remain in communicating disruptions to riders.

The scale of what is coming is significant.

TxDOT’s construction is expected to continue until 2042 and cost approximately $13 billion. As of September 2026, more than 12 METRO routes are already operating on detours, affecting more than 15,000 daily transit trips. Over the course of construction, more than half of METRO’s bus and rail network could be affected which would impact routes that serve nearly 200,000 daily transit trips.

And many riders still do not know what is coming.

On September 29, we’ll share what riders told us, what years of construction could mean for getting around Houston, and what LINK Houston believes can be done to reduce disruptions, improve communication, protect access, and keep transit moving.
