Iconic Third Ward Restaurant Redevelops Into Multi-Use Property

Spanish Village’s future includes commercial retail and event space.

Houston’s iconic Spanish Village is returning following a redevelopment of the property at 4720 Almeda Road. Spearheaded by Wake Up LLC developers, the three-level mixed-use destination will preserve the legacy of Spanish Village while introducing new retail, dining, and event-driven uses to the Almeda corridor and surrounding community. Demolition of the current space is set to start on Wednesday, February 11.

Plans for this project are fully stamped and approved by the City. The future development plan includes a first-floor commercial retail space, a Spanish Village anchor restaurant on the second floor, and an event and flex space with views of the downtown Houston skyline on the third floor. In the short term, the cleared lot will be utilized for parking until the project is fully funded and vertical construction begins.

Spanish Village has earned an incredible reputation thanks to its menu and traditional atmosphere, having opened in 1953. Houstonians were dismayed to see the property close in 2023, where generations of customers had their photos displayed on the walls and decades-old dishes remained on the menu. The restaurant is best known for its famous margarita recipe, passed down for nearly seven generations. The owners have decided to bring those recipes back in a new, modernized space that will spark urban renewal in the Third Ward neighborhood.

“We’re thrilled with the opportunity to reimagine this legendary space for the Almeda community, where traditions and celebrations can be honored. With space for local artisans to open shop, an expansive event venue with one-of-a-kind views, and a restaurant that attracts the greater Houston community, Almeda Road will see a rejuvenation,” said Steven Rogers, owner of Spanish Village and project manager.

About Spanish Village

Spanish Village Restaurant was a historic Tex-Mex restaurant located in the heart of the Third Ward in Houston, Texas. It offered the same recipes for 70 years, including their famous enchiladas and Spanish Village Margarita. Originally opened by the Medina family, the restaurant was purchased by Steven Rogers in 2021 and operated for two years. The restaurant is set to reopen in 2027 after a property redevelopment, preserving its history.
