Paving the Way: Safer Crossings and Smarter Streets at Elgin & Columbia Tap Trail

Houston Southeast was proud to join Friends of Columbia Tap, BikeHouston, and community partners for a successful tactical urbanism demo at Elgin & the Columbia Tap Trail—bringing a safer, more connected streetscape to life!

With support from a People For Bikes grant and the hard work of volunteers, including CGEA Planning + Design, this pop-up project showed how a simple design improvement—extending the Elgin median to meet the trail—can reduce unnecessary U-turns, improve cyclist flow, enhance pedestrian safety, and keep traffic moving smoothly. Best of all, it didn’t remove a single travel lane!

This project builds on insights from the City of Houston’s TOOLE study and our MOVE Southeast Mobility Plan. We’re incredibly honored that our Chairman, Brian G. Smith, was on-site to support this critical step toward a safer Columbia Tap Trail for everyone.

Thank you to all our partners for helping move this vision forward. Together, we’re building a safer, smarter Southeast Houston.
