Revitalizing US 90A: A Safer, Smoother Commute Is Coming to Southeast Houston

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is bringing big changes to a one-mile stretch of US 90A in Harris County, aiming to enhance pedestrian safety, improve traffic flow, and upgrade drainage systems — all without requiring additional land or displacing residents.

Project Snapshot

  • Location: US 90A, from east of Griggs Road to Spur 5 in Harris County
  • Length: Approximately 1 mile
  • Cost: $11.2 million (state-funded)
  • Project Number: CSJ: 0027-10-076
  • Right-of-Way Needs: None
  • Displacements: None

What’s Being Improved?

This project focuses on upgrading both the roadway and pedestrian infrastructure:

  • Sidewalk Reconstruction: Old sidewalks will be rebuilt and gaps will be filled, ensuring continuous pedestrian paths on both sides of the street.
  • New Pedestrian Crossings: Including a key crossing at Belvedere Street and Old Spanish Trail.
  • Raised Medians: A safety upgrade between Calhoun Road and Martin Luther King Boulevard with decorative pavers and landscaping to match nearby segments.
  • Intersection Signals: Outdated span wires will replace safer mast arm signals.
  • Drainage System Overhaul: Replacing aging systems for better stormwater management and road durability.
  • Improved Curbs: Raised to current safety standards.

Environmental & Community Impact

Good news — the improvements are not expected to impact nearby MacGregor Park, which is protected under federal law. And since no new land is needed, no homes or businesses will be affected.

Partners in Progress

This project is a joint effort between TxDOT and the Old Spanish Trail/Almeda Corridors Redevelopment Authority-TIRZ #7. Houston Southeast will maintain the new medians, while TIRZ #7 supports design enhancements.

Timeline Highlights

  • Fall 2019: Data collection and needs assessment
  • Spring 2023: Community open house and public feedback
  • Fall 2023: Environmental decision expected
  • Fall 2024: Final design and construction begin
