University of Houston System Approved for $109 Million in State Funding

As the city’s first new medical school in nearly half a century. The money will help pay for the UH College of Medicine, new facilities for the UH Law Center and Hobby School of Public Affairs, and repairs to buildings damaged by Hurricane Harvey.

UH is hoping to begin enrolling medical students in fall 2020. Plans call for the school to focus on primary care in underserved areas, a huge need in Houston and the state.

Plans also call for the school to be built on campus, a 43-acre tract of undeveloped property just southeast of the campus proper, a location pivotal to the role it plans to serve in the surrounding community of Third Ward. To that end, a safety-net health clinic for low-income people opened on campus April 1.
